Cardio and Strength Training:
Cardio combined with strength training is the best way to increase cardiovascular endurance while building muscle and strength. When using this method of fitness training you will trigger “muscle confusion” which proves to yield quicker results for weight loss as well as overall maximum fitness performance.
I am a huge proponent of Functional Fitness. Functional Fitness’ goal is to have you stand erect on your feet, utilizing your core to support your body, while strength training with weights. Functional Fitness is about training the body to handle real life situations such as climbing a flight of stairs or carrying your luggage through an airport without becoming winded. Conventional and traditional weight training methods isolate the muscles whereas functional fitness use the muscles in an integrated motion. The key is to have the muscles work together simultaneously rather than independently.
Sports Specific Training:
As a fitness professional and personal trainer I am dedicated to developing physical conditions to improve performance and skills at a particular sport. It is my experience that understanding the needs of the game is a necessity in order to train athletes at the correct pace to meet the particular sport's requirements.
Sports Specific Training can help improve strength, flexibility and stamina to improve performance in specific sports. Examples of options include increasing arm strength for tennis playing or improve strength and core stability providing better balance while playing golf.
Fast twitch training, plyometrics, speed training, strength training and agility training can be utilized for baseball, football, basketball and soccer training just to name a few.
The use of balance and proprioception is an absolute must when it comes to sport specific training as well as everyday life movements. Studies show that athletes that work on their joint positioning as well as their inner balance suffer fewer injuries.
Don’t fool yourself, if you are not eating four to six small nutritious meals a day you will not sustain a healthy weight throughout life. You can obtain quick short lived weight loss results with quick fixes such as b-12 shots and fad diets but to ultimately make a lifestyle change and maintain a healthy weight you must eat small frequent meals daily and drink plenty of water according to your body weight.
A poor diet does not allow the body to repair itself daily. Not eating properly affects your performance at the office as well as during your workouts.
The food pyramid does work! We have all heard of the food pyramid and it is usually affixed on every loaf of bread we purchase, yet most of us do not subscribe to its message of healthy eating. The message is simple; eat clean cuts of lean protein such as poultry, fish, legumes and nuts to promote healthy weight loss. Your plate should be as colorful as possible full of fruits and vegetables at every meal. Avoid a diet full of processed foods as it is food that has been altered to have an extended shelf life. Unfortunately, most of the ingredients used to accomplish this are pretty unhealthy if eaten in large amounts such as sodium, hydrogenated fats, sugar, etc. As with anything in life moderation is the key!
